Chapter 3 of 4

Conditions and branches

A condition separates your contacts according to what they have done. Those who match go on through the Yes branch and the rest through the No branch. That way whoever already bought stops getting the sales email and whoever didn't open your welcome gets a reminder.

Add a condition

  1. 1. Click the plus sign where you want to decide and choose Condition.
  2. 2. In Check, choose what to look at.
  3. 3. Fill in its value: the products, the tag, the countries, the amount or the email.
  4. 4. Put at least one step under Yes and another under No.

The column opens in two below the condition. Each branch has its chip, which folds it so you can see the whole automation. On a phone, the two chips sit side by side and you tap the branch you want to open.

What you can check

A condition can look at whether the contact bought a product, has a tag, which country they buy from, how much they have spent or the status of their subscription. It can also look at whether they opened an earlier email of the same automation or clicked one of its links.

Wait for something to happen

A wait can also last until the contact opens an email, clicks a link or buys. Choose Until an event, pick the event and set a Time limit. If the event comes first, the contact goes on at that moment. If the time limit runs out, they go on through the Timed out branch, where you can put a last reminder.

After the branches

When their branch ends, each contact continues with the step right after the condition. If there is none, the automation ends for them. That way you can put a step common to everyone behind the two branches, such as adding a tag.

An example

After the welcome of your lead magnet, add a Bought a product condition with your course. Under Yes, put the student tag. Under No, wait two days and send an email with a coupon. Whoever buys gets only what is useful to them.

What you have now

Your automation treats each contact differently according to what they do. In the last chapter you test it, activate it and measure each step.
